Sea freight is the transportation of goods and products via cargo by sea from one port to another. It is a cost-effective way to move large quantities of goods over long distances and is often used for international trade.
The process involves the loading of goods onto containers or pallets and their transportation by sea, with various ports serving as stopping points along the way. With advancements in technology and shipping operations, sea freight has become a reliable and efficient mode of transportation for businesses and individuals alike.
Are you planning to ship goods by sea to or from the United States?
As a freight forwarder, DocShipper literally handles every step of the process, including customs clearance.
FCL Freight
FCL stands for Full Container Load. It is the shipping of goods in a full dedicated container.
FCL Ocean Freight reduces transportation costs if you have a lot of cargo to move.
Let DocShipper handle the ocean freight of your goods from or to the United States so you don't have to worry about anything or have to call anyone.
We will make sure that your goods, are delivered to your doorstep regardless of the location.
LCL Freight
LCL stands for Less than Container Load. It is the shipment of goods that do not fill an entire container and are consolidated with other shipments.
LCL Ocean Freight is an attractive option if you do not hurry, as delivery can take longer due to the consolidation process and handling at the origin and destination terminals.
DocShipper recommend the LCL ocean freight quote for light or non-bulky cargo. In general, loads up to 10 tons and 20 m3 can be transported by LCL.
Freight Insurance
Freight insurance is a type of insurance coverage for goods being transported by sea, air, or land. It protects the owner of the goods against loss or damage during transit. The coverage can be purchased by the shipper, consignee, or a third-party insurance company and provides financial compensation for covered losses, subject to policy terms and conditions. The cost of freight insurance is usually a small percentage of the value of the goods being shipped, and it can provide peace of mind for high-value or time-sensitive shipments.
Customs Clearance
Customs clearance is the process of obtaining permission to import or export goods across international borders. It involves the declaration of goods and payment of duties, taxes, and fees to the relevant authorities. The process is typically handled by a licensed customs broker or freight forwarder and is necessary to comply with local laws and regulations, as well as to protect the interests of the importing and exporting countries. It's also possible to clear your goods by yourself. The customs clearance process can be complex and time-consuming, and it is important to ensure that all necessary documentation and procedures are followed to avoid delays or penalties.

FAQ | Ocean freight from and to the US
How long does sea freight take from China to USA
Shipping from China to the U.S. is approximately 14 to 40 days depending on the port of departure, destination, and Full Container Load or Less Container Load.
Example : Departure Port of Shanghai 14 to 24 days to Los Angeles/Long Beach, Departure Port of Ningbo 22 days to Seattle/Tacoma.
How to calculate freight charges by sea
To calculate freight charges by sea, you need to consider the following factors:
- Volume (in cubic meters or cubic feet) or weight (in kilograms or pounds) of the shipment
- Distance between the port of origin and the port of destination
- Type of shipping container (dry van, reefer, flat rack, etc.)
- Market rate for shipping the type of cargo and route
- Additional costs, such as terminal handling, storage, customs, insurance, etc.
Once you have these variables, you can use a freight calculator or consult with a freight forwarder to get an estimate of the shipping costs.
Is air freight more expensive than sea freight
It depends on distance, volume/weight and urgency of delivery. If you have a large shipment and choose air freight, it may be more expensive compared to sea freight.
However, air freight is a faster mode of transportation, and if speed is of the utmost importance, it may be the better choice. It's recommended to consider the factors mentioned above and weigh the trade-off between speed and cost to determine the best option for your shipment.
You could also consider a combination of air and sea freight (air freight for a portion of the shipment and sea freight for the rest) to balance the cost and transit time.
It is also a good idea to consult our experts for professional advice and cost estimates.
How long does sea freight take
The transit time for ocean freight shipping will vary and depend on many factors, such as destination and origin of the shipment, type, and size of vessel, freight routing and transit ports, availability of space on the vessel, and time to load and unload. The average ocean transport can take 7 to 45 days, but some routes can take longer.
